Washington, D.C. Convention Center
Pepco Energy Services Exhibits the Latest in Innovative Energy Strategies for the New Washington Convention Center

The Challenge
Whether it is a concert, symposium, expo or conference, Washington, DC plays host to a multitude of events for its residents and visitors. Because the nation's capital serves as one of the country's focal points for large gatherings, there was an urgent need for a new exhibition facility that could accommodate the increasing demand for these functions.

During the initial planning stages of this new $756 million world-class facility, the Washington Convention Center Authority recognized the significance of implementing the most efficient energy system possible, and they wanted an innovative, dependable team to ensure this success. With the anticipation of an overwhelming daily influx of visitors to the new center, the Authority knew that the facility must constantly run at maximum efficiency.

The Solution

To avoid costs and ensure substantial energy savings while maintaining the highest standards, The Washington Convention Center looked to a joint venture of Pepco Energy Services and Trigen Energy Corporation to provide energy services for the New Washington Convention Center.

In addition to design and construction of the central plant, this energy partnership will operate and maintain the plant to provide various services including hot water, chilled water, peak-shaving and emergency backup power for the center.

Pepco Energy Services and Trigen have extensive experience in providing cost-saving energy management services. They were able to offer the New Washington Convention Center a creative and economical approach to their energy concerns.

The scope of the work for this 2.3 million square foot facility includes 10,500 tons of chilled water capacity, 50,000,000 BTU's of hot water and four internal combustion generators which will supply a portion of the electric power directly to selected chillers during peak electric demands.
